BREC Kicks Off First Phase of Edgehill at Southtown Redevelopment with Affordable Family Housing

Edgehill at Southtown is the redevelopment of Southtown Court, a 22-acre public housing community that has been called home by countless families for more than 80 years.  This site is being transformed into a mixed-use, mixed-income community, while honoring the legacy of the Southtown Court families and positioning Edgehill at Southtown to be an integral part of Birmingham’s growing medical research district.

Affordable family housing project includes 60 apartment homes.

BREC Development will kick off the first phase of this project with affordable family housing consisting of a collection of 60 urban, mid-rise apartments anchored by a 4,000 square-foot clubhouse. These environmentally-conscious apartment homes, which are slated to open late 2024 and will be managed by Birmingham-based property management firm SPM, LLC, will include spacious one, two and three-bedroom floorplans ranging in size from 861-1,289 square feet.  Washer and dryers, bedroom suites with large, walk-in closets, open living areas, stainless steel appliance packages and contemporary pendant lighting are all standard amenities within these homes.  Residents will have all-inclusive access to a 24-hour fitness club, business center, outdoor playground, study/tutoring lounge and activity room.

Once completed, Edgehill at Southtown will serve as a walkable, multi-dimensional hub close to jobs, services, dining and more.

Closely following this project, within the same block, will be an affordable housing development for seniors, aged 62 and over. Future development phases will include a focus on expanding the city’s healthcare and biotech sectors, given the proximity to University of Alabama – Birmingham, Ascension St. Vincent’s, Southern Research and the Birmingham VA Medical Center. Once all construction is complete, Edghill at Southtown will not only support returning Southtown residents for housing, but will also serve as a walkable, multi-dimensional hub close to jobs, vital healthcare services, retail, dining and entertainment.
